Idealistic Change

Brook McCoy Topic: Idealistic Change Primary Text: The Beautiful Girl of the Moon Tower I interpreted this folktale as being symbolic of idealistic change, and saw many meaningful connections that led me to this. The main idea I really wanted to get across in the illustration is their being this philosophical battle taking place. One side being the young, simple, passionate, force of change, and the other being the old, bloated, drained, forces of stability. In the first panel in particular I really wanted to get across the idea of young vs old. Which depicts a scene of the princess listening to her father’s last heart beat. Something not explicitly stated in the folktale but something I imagined early on. This is representative of that emotion of wanting the old to die off so that a new better society can be allowed to exist. In the second panel is the part of the tale where Anton, is fighting against the hog in the gardens. Anton is lean and muscular, their is no fat to be trimmed, no flaws. While the hog is quite the opposite, it is encumbered with its own body. Which one can find there to be many imperfections, with its numerous creases and fatty chasms. These problems of which have built up over its many years plundering the garden. Running parallel to maybe a corrupt ruler or goverment. Or even just an old institution that’s problems have built up over the years. While Anton represents this younger force that hasn’t had the time to have had these issues. Moving into the last major scene, the victor has been decided. Change has triumphed over stability. This I believe is representative in the marriage scene in the folktale. The kingdom has been renewed. The moon inhabitants are happy. Anton is now able to grasp the lady of his dreams, no longer tied his imagination she stands there now with him. He grasp upon her body. Her youth and his flawless form become one. But on his head he wears a crown, a very similar crown in fact to the one the king worn. The only difference is in their age. It is in this that shows the tragedy of idealistic change. Is that eventually it’s youth will fade, it’s muscles will shrink and in their stead be fat. The crown will rust. But for now we celebrate. Until the universe deems it time to start again.
